CAVACHON

A Cavachon is a hybrid that is a cross-breed between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise.  It may have any combination of traits from those two breeds.  The main reason for cross breeding two purebred dogs is the result known as hybrid vigor, producing a generally healthier dog.  We only breed what is called 1st generation Cavachons, always using a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and purebred Bichon Frise as our parent dogs.  We do both combinations, sometimes using the Cavalier as the mother, and sometimes using the Bichon.  We have not seen any notable differences in the puppies with these different combinations.

The Cavachon is sweet and innocent like the Cavalier, yet bouncy and peppy like the Bichon. It is appealing to pet owners because of its qualities that come from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, such as friendliness and sweetness, along with its beautiful varied coat colors.  Its powder puff coat is attractive and its temperament makes for a great companion dog.  The Cavachon generally ranges from 15-25 lbs, and 11-14 inches in height.

It comes in a variety of colors including, red, white, peach, peach & white (we call this blenheim), sable, sable & white, black, black & white, tri color (very rare), and black & tan (we have not produced one of these yet).  The colors can be solid, or parti, and we often have a variety of colors to choose from in our puppies.  The coat is long, somewhat wavy to curly and hypoallergenic.  They are generally low or non-shedding dogs, and we have had a lot of success with families that suffer from allergies being able to have a Cavachon as a family pet. The undercoat is dense and soft, while the outer coat is full, soft and silky.  A daily brushing is recommended, and at least a weekly brushing is required.

The Cavachon is sweet and friendly, yet playful and energetic, and is almost always a people-lover.  They are especially fond of children and often will frolic and play with them for long periods of time.  They are good with other dogs and cats, too.

The Cavachon learns fast and is considered a very intelligent dog.  They are energetic and do need regular walks and playtime.  Having a fenced yard is highly recommended and socialization is very important.  Cavachons generally do very well at puppy obedience school and it is a great way to bond with your puppy!

Their health is excellent, and stronger than either the purebred Cavalier or Bichon.  We have found them to be wonderful family pets, combining the Cavalier's sweet disposition and friendliness with the Bichon’s low-shedding, low-dander coats.
